Customer Service is DEAD

We've been asking our postal office and the one here where our mail is (it was forwarded as of 3 weeks ago!!!) and they keep telling us that it can take 5-10 postal days for mail to reach you so they don't want to waste their time verifying the info.... well - FINALLY someone was willing to look up the info in the computer - and sure enough - they messed it up. They have had our mail on FORWARD - but they lost the address - so everything has been sent return to sender. EVERYTHING! This wouldn't be a problem except for the quick nature of our move meant that I wasn't able to notify everyone of our address change. So - we had to file another forward request. UGH UGH UGH It will be 5-10 more postal days till we start receiving that mail. Oh - and guess where Dan's paycheck is. In the mail. :(

Then - the A/C company - I don't want to get into it since it just makes me sooo mad - but 3 weeks later they have not shown up on their 4th scheduled visit. So many levels of customer service/realtors/management are involved in this - it's ridiculous. Essentially the company in question doesn't want to come out because we're "claiming" it's a warranty issue when it isn't. It's the exact same thing that was fixed 3 months ago when it was still under warranty - so it's still covered... they say it's not the same thing - but they haven't come out to look. Even better when the customer service rep from our home builder came to the house to take a look he was shocked since there is an exposed ground wire sticking out of the top of the vents and the there are two wires spliced together and held together with electrical tape. Yeah- they aren't supposed to be that way.

I'm sooo stressed. I hate how complicated everything has to be.

Trying to make a new pediatrician appt for Em's 4 month check up is impossible. They needed her current immunization records before they could set an appointment... WHY??? I don't know. So now they have them, but are waiting for someone to call me back to make the appt. Well - I'm out of town - out of cell distance - all next week.

Oh yeah - Qwest mixed up our change of phone as well - so our phone has been listed as disconnected when anyone called instead of going to voicemail.

SO we have no mail - no phone calls getting to us. Nice.

she's doing just fine..

Well - I got a phone call from my mom and Julia is having fun. Not that my mom has seen her much. Julia's been busy playing with her cousin-ish Avery and Colleen. Mom said she can see her playing in the water and she looks like she's having the time of her life.

She did mention last night briefly that she wishes we were there. My mom asked her why and she said "because I know they like it here" and then went to bed.

That's my girl.

What I like about Maine...

I have to admit I'm still having some adjustment issues to life here in Maine. Mostly because I'm stranded in a hotel 20/7 (As soon as Dan gets home with the car I make him take me somewhere so I can get out of here!!). So here are some things I like about Maine...

1 - Capt'n Eli's Blueberry Pop. Damn yummy.

2. Not dealing with this... the Heat Island

3. Being an hour and half from here...

So far that's what I have... I'll keep you posted as I discover more things I like about being here.

Oh - 4. Housekeeping ;)

Speaking of change of address..

How the hell does it take the USPS sooo long to get my mail to me. We filed our change of address on July 7 to stop service as of July 8. We still have not had one single piece of mail forwarded to us. Not one. The post office replies that it can take 5-10 business days to start.

Well - I'd like my mail. Please.

HBO

Let me just tell you how much I'm enjoying having HBO - even if I'm currently caught up on the lineup... We haven't had HBO in about 4 years.

I love Entorauge (could Jeremy Piven be any more fun??). Right now I'm all caught up on Alien Invasions (they even look alike) between War of the Worlds and Independence Day.

HBO reminds me of being a kid. I used to covet the new little magazine when it arrived each month. This was back in the day when you didn't have a VCR and even if you did movies did come out on VHS for years after their theatrical release....

oh I'm sooo lonely

No phone calls - no emails... 2 kids napping. Suite is already clean thanks to Luisa's handiwork and the absence of Sr. Messmaker Doughkid. Already called 20 places this morning to change our address...

100 channels (including HBO!) and nothing to watch... I'll just sit here in hopes that I get an email. Even spam.

Sometimes you're wrong

And I guess this time I sure was...

Anna is happy as a clam without Julia here. I thought for sure today would be a hard day for her. So far - she's having a blast. I guess I didn't realize how much time/energy/attention that Julia takes. Anna listens to everything I ask her to do - and she's happy. Not a single tantrum yet today.

She's asked where Julia is twice and wasn't upset when I reminded her.

Here are some funny things I've heard from Anna in the last 20 hours...

- Trying to scratch the bug bite on her shoulder thats out of her reach... "oh no. OH NO. Mommy, cratch peese. I can't reach it. Oh NO. I can't reach it. Hewp me."

- "Hey momma - knock, knock?" laughing hysterically "orange" laughing hysterically.

- "Hey momma, I'm (signing HUNGRY). Yunch peese?" So I ask her what she wants for lunch. "NOT butter and jerry"

Something else she's doing that just cracks me up - and reminds me of what a joyful little spirit she has (and what a ham she is)... when she's excited about something she throws her little arms in the air injubilation and squeals "WHOO HOO". She does this running up the hill by our hotel to get to the wildflowers, and yesterday she did it while running down the beach to the lake. It's cute times ten.

Well - even if Anna doesn't miss Julia yet - I do. Not in the dramatic wailing momma kind of way - but I didn't realize how much time I spend talking to her and how much of my daily conversation involves her. I don't miss the constant bickering/struggling between her and Anna, and I don't miss her new 5 going on 13 attitude but I do miss her. Not enough to drive up and pick her up though. ha ha ha ha

2/3

I only have 2/3 of my kids tonight. It's been 4 1/2 months since I had 2 kids - and it's been a long time since my oldest was 2.

Julia is up at the cabin with my parents. She didn't even get out of the water to say goodbye to me. I made her get out to say goodbye to her sister.

She'll have a blast. I miss her. I don't miss her, miss her, but I miss her. The ride home was long and quiet. Then Em screamed for 1/2 hour so that was fun.

I hope she sleeps well. I hope she misses me a little so that she's happy to see us on Saturday but not too much that she doesn't have a great time.

War of the worlds....

Ok - I know I have blogged about this in the past but really - one of the most disturbing things I have seen in a long time involves Tom Cruise. Like a lot of others the whole TomKat/TomKitten thing is ummm - weird. I hope Katie Holmes just has class and taste and has decided not to parade her baby in front of the media (although I do like the idea of selling the photos for millions and donating it to a worthy charity)... but unfortunately I think something more bizarre is taking place.

That though is not the disturbing thing of which I speak. It's the sound and visuals from the movie War of the Worlds. The whole human digestion and spewing forth all over the world is just eery.

That's all..

Happy Birthday Jackie Beat

And rock on. Jackie Beat's birthday blog had me yelling "right on Sistah!!" Read it.

Swam the dock!

Julia swam out to the dock - without a life jacket. I thought we were two summers away from that! She and her cousin (well - my cousin's daughter - so whatever that makes her) had a blast jumping off the dock and swimming around.

Anna loved the lake as well. She was trying her hardest to drown - but survived despite herself. Those water wings are a Godsend for kids like her. Yes I know it doesn't take the place of super size adult supervision - but it keeps her face above the water.

Emma enjoyed being manhandled by her extended family. I learned this weekend it may not require a village to raise kids, but it sure is awfully helpful.

It was so nice to only be an hour and a half from my favorite place on Earth. I can't wait to go back this week!

Edited to add pictures...

Back in the day...

Remember back in the day when Dan was interviewing for jobs out here? He interviewed with Company #3? Well - the lady he interviewed with really liked him, but didn't have a position for him right then. Last night we went and looked at a rental house - and it was hers! she said in her email after we realized the connection, that she really thought he was a nice guy. So - they have invited us to dinner even if we don't rent their place. Nice!
They have an almost five month old son.

We went to dinner with Joanna the other night - it was sooo nice to see her, and even nicer knowing that when she left it wouldn't be the last time I'd see for a year or two. :) Julia just loves her. She's mentioned a couple of times since then that she likes Joanna. Her Dad called me - Mr. Him - and welcomed me to town and told me how excited he was (and his wife - Birthday Buddy) that we were living in Maine. Isn't that nice?

Most of your emails ask how it is to be living the dream. Well - we are and we aren't... right now I could be in Anyplace, USA from the looks of it. I'm hotel bound during the day so that Dan can drive into work. He needs the van so that if he has to run out during the day he can. There isn't anything to do within walking distance of here... so our hotel looks like any hotel just about anywhere. We do have a pool so once a day we go swimming.

Sunday we went to the Portland Head Light - and that was fun. The girls had a blast playing at the park. Real grass! Yesterday we drove out to Falmouth to look at a possible rental house (in an awesome location!!! a block from the bay - but scary house) and that was kind of Maine like. Water and sailboats and beautiful stuff. Then we drove to New Gloucester to look at the other rental house - which is a real possiblity but Dan isn't sure he wants to commute that far. It was a 2800 sq ft. historical home - built in 1797. It was gorgeous and very well maintained. dan's other concern is that we'd have to spend a lot of time nad money to "Anna" proof the house and property. The drive out there was amazing - gorgeous mountains and farms. Very Maine. Other than those two times, I feel like I could be anywhere.

I hope we can find a rental soon - and that it begins feeling like home.

Oh - and our house back in AZ has had 2 people sort of interested in it. The A/C is broken and the A/C company is being a jerk about repairing it (even thought it's the same thing that was wrong this winter - it's an HVAC unit)... and the water was shut off because of a confusion on my part on the electronic payment I sent. CRAP. Hopefully those things will be resolved soon - and the house will sell - we'll have the money for a great rental and can get out of the hotel, oh - and get that 2nd car. We're looking into getting a used (as in very used) Subaru or some other sort of small 4WD vehicle.

So - that's about it for us here. Not much going on. After 3 weeks of constant business - this change of pace is a bit drastic. Beautiful - but drastic.

Oh - did I mention the humidity rained out - and its a gorgeous 75 degrees now! Take that 115 degree Phoenix... with your haboobs!

Love all God's creatures, big and small..

except for the one's that shit all over the floor.

Yes, Trooper is giving me a run for my money. I'm ready to chuck him overboard and begin life anew with no dogs!

He's always been a pain in the proverbial arse - he LOVES paper products - paper towels, napkins, diapers... all the way up to cotton products - particularly underwear. Now I'd think it was the "ahem" smell - but he'll eat brand new ones too. He's been a good dog though. With just a couple minor skirmishes - he's done well. The only times he's ever really had accidents inside is when he's doing the "boy" dog thing and marking his territory when another dog had been present.

Here at the hotel though - he's decided to make this his personal toilet. He's pooped 6 inches outside the kitty litter box - 3 times now. Yes, he's a dog. An 80 lb mutt with no prior interest in the kitty litter box except for the occasional snack. (eeeeeew - I know). He also ate through his wonderful pop up kennel. Also unlike him. He's always loved being kenneled and often chooses to go in it on his own terms.

So - tonight we dropped some $$$ and bought him a new wire kennel (cuz we have all the room in the world in this hotel room with 5 people and their stuff). The guy at the pet store recommended doggy day care so he's not lonely during the day. UMMMMMMMMMMMMMm - I'm with him all day!!! I have no car. I can't go anywhere.

Dan walks him before he leaves at 8am - I walk him again at 11am and then after the girls nap around 2p or 3p and then dan walks him again when he gets home at 6p and then 2-3 more times before bed. Yesterday he wouldn't pee for me on the leash... today he did fine - but then was pooping inside.

I think he just is full of shit after not pooping regularly in the car for 5 days. Let's hope. This momma has enough on her plate to deal with baby poop, 2 year old poop, kitty litter and now dog poop.

1/3

We have made it just over 1/3 of the way to Maine in 3 days. oy! The van was fixed in Oklahoma City - and we were thrilled to have it just be the battery!

We're in hot and humid Oklahoma. Tulsa to be exact - staying at a nice hotel with a bunch of little Little Leaguers here for the Super Series.

Hoping today to make it to Indianapolis today - not likely - but we're going to try.

Dan's loading up the car and then we're on our way!

Hoping the rest of the trip is uneventful - the girls are antsy - the parents are antsy. Everyone is still smiling though!

Seriously folks...

I'm not a happy camper.

6 hours in the car - no DVD - bad
no DVD because alternator is dead and needs replaced - VERY bad

So - we're leaving New Mexico in the morning and driving to the closest Honda dealership to get the alternator replaced (hopefully that is... they were already closed there when we found out what was wrong with the van). If we stay here - it will take them 3 days to get the part in.

Hopefully the Honda dealer in Amarillo will have the alternator on hand - and will take pity on us and get us in right away. ummmmmmmmmmmm - yeah right.

DId I mention that our car just had it's 36K mile check up 2 weeks ago - and now we're 500 miles over our warranty period?????????????

Oh - yeah - did I also mention that the earliest our A/C people will get in to fix our A/C back at the house is AUGUST 31. We need to go with them since they repaired this same thing a couple months ago and it should be covered by the same warranty.

An update: The VAN won't start at all now... we have to find someone to jump the car at 4am - then let it run for an hour before we can drive it - then we need to drive it to the dealership.

hey

Could I get some big hugs sent my parents way? This past year has been one big tragic event after another, starting of course with the accident back in August. They continue to go through a lot. Today was hard because they had to put their dog Sweetie Pie down today due to bone cancer. If you remember they lost their German Shepherd, Gretchen, right after the accident when she was hit by a car, but Sweetie survived the accident with only minor wounds. They have a lot going on and it would mean a lot if you could send some happy thoughts, prayers, hugs and whatever other positive energy you can muster towards them.

Thanks!!

On our way...

I wrote this long drawn out blog for today.. but blogg er is a BEE Y OTCH and ate it.

so - quickyupdate. After 2 more days of delays... we're off to Maine. Broken A/C and dishwasher blowout all over my floor and then a vacuum cleaner explosion.... ahhh yes, it's been fun.

We're up North in Arizona and going to get the show on the road tomorrow morning. Dan has been spending a lot of time working - so it looks like our trip is just going to get more and more drawn out.... oh well. We're made of money - and time.

:)

Anna was soooo cute - as we went through the mountains today all we heard was - "Yook mommy, purdy" "yook mommy" "yook mommy!" "ohhhhh - ahhhhh" We went through a tunnel and she squealed with delight. When we got out of it "YEE HAW"

Then we all got cranky. SO we stopped at the hotel. Dinner, swimming and by 9pm 2/3rds of the Doughkids were snoring - and by 10pm Dan joined them. Now it's just me and Emma Leigh. Let's hope sometime in the next 2 hours she's asleep...

Hope to update from at least Amarillo tomorrow... :( Man - who knew it would take us 8 days to get there.

The one where I talk about my boobs...

So - Dad - you might wanna stop reading now...

Nursing my three Doughkids has been an interesting experience for me. I can honestly say that I love breastfeeding. I'm a breastfeeding fanatic. I think breastfeeding rocks. I hate formula (gasp!!).

Now - get your panties all untwisted and come back here... take a deep breath. Whew. Feel better?

Let me make this clear - I could care less what you feed your younglings - or how. If you feed your baby formula - that's splendid. I'm not even judging you from over here... REALLY! Quite frankly I don't understand why so many people care about how others feed their babies, read any expecting club board and over time you will see 1-3 fights about breastfeeding vs. formula feeding. My concerns come in when moms put soda in a bottle and feed it to their kids, oh - and whiskey... but other than that - I just don't care what you feed that babe of yours.

Back to me here... the reasons I hate formula are personal and have nothing to do with you feeding your kid, I'm not on a moral high horse mocking thee. Not even a soap box. I just can't stand the smell of formula. It has always made me gag - all the way back to my babysitting days. Just the smell in the can is enough to make me sick - and the premixed formula - forgeddaboutit. Then when you factor in formula spit up and then formula poop. UGH. I'm done for.

When I started nursing my own baby I couldn't figure out why her poop didn't stink (it didn't smell like roses - but it didn't make me want to throw myself in front of a car either). I thought for sure it was some biological factor that allows moms to take care of their young. Then I realized I had never taken care of a child that was 100% breastfed.

So - I digress. Breastfeeding (bout me, not you). Ok. Nursing Julia was a dream. I had no pain. She latched on and was great. She gained fine. I didn't spend time worrying about my supply. Other than the one time she bit me - HARD - I thought about stopping. My first goal was to nurse her for 3 weeks. Then 2 months. Then 6 months. Then a year. At a year she was really bothered by cows milk so I continued to nurse her. At that point I only nursed on demand (or so I thought). I nursed her until 20 months. I planned 2 months to wean her. Gradually stopping. After 3 days of telling her "nee nee went night night" she didn't ask anymore. And like that - nursing was over.

With Anna - it was a different story. She latched on within minutes of being born. After her 3rd feeding I suspected she wasn't latched well - but she was still eating nicely. The Lactaction consultant at the hospital was off for the weekend - so I had a regular old nurse help me. She looked at me from across the room and told me she was latched fine. "You've done this before right? So it's fine". After 3 days I would cry every time she winced - for fear it would be time to nurse. My nipples cracked, they bled, pieces of my boob just plain old fell off. There was a significant amount of ibuprophen being sucked down - and a lot of crying. I seriously contemplated formula... I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I didn't want to lose that idyllic nursing relationship I had with Julia. I wanted it with Anna too. after 3 weeks of pain - it went away and Anna and I found that nursing happy place. We didn't gaze lovingly at each other over my boob like Julia and I had - since Anna was a no nonsense nurser, but it was a good relationship. Other than one little introduction to plugged ducts (that pointing the nose in the direction of the plugged duct thing was a lifesaver - awkward as hell for positioning - but a lifesaver nonetheless), and a fun case of thrush... for 15 months things went along swimmingly.

I was ready with Emma Leigh. I wasn't going to suffer like I did with Anna. I planned on nursing for that 3 week period, but if things were bad after that - I was just going to have to do formula. Surprise ... it went well! Then she had jaundice and the doctor told us to supplement the hell out of her with formula (which I might add I have learned is an old wives' tale in terms of jaundice treatment. The thought is - the more they eat - the more bilirubin they pass. BUT - as long as you have normal milk supply - breastmilk is actually better at getting the bili to pass since babies traditionally can digest breast milk faster, therefore drink more, and pass more bili - there are other more "scientifical" reasons - but I'm not a medical doctor. :) ). She took about 3 oz of formula total - and she hated every single ounce of it. Not as much as I did - but I sucked it up for my baby. She refused to eat it although she'd take breastmilk out of a bottle without a problem.

Then the reflux diagnosis. Breastmilk is believed to be easier on the baby to digest and so better for a refluxer (although much, harder on mom - since they like to comfort nurse 24/7). So - sore boobs galore. Then after my boobs toughened up and were used to the constant onslaught of aggressive baby feeding - evil thrush reared it's ugly head. Twice. OUCH. Once the thrush cleared up everything was hunky dory.

Now - not so much. The last three weeks have been fraught with burning nipples. OH NO!! Not thrush again! Since I hadn't lit my nipples on fire - I figured the burning was symptomatic of them healing from the thrush. Em never showed sign of thrush again.. but yet the burning continued. I finally talked myself into stopping nursing... I couldn't handle white burning nipples any longer.

Then I looked on the internet. VOILA. There is a problem! I called the doctor and verified that indeed I have BLANCHED NIPPLES. WTF???? They aren't sure whether it's just blanched nipples or I have vasospasms - but regardless it's pretty much the same effect and same treatment. I need to work with her latch, keep things dry, apply dry heat several times a day and take some ibuprophen.

My point? Oh - I didn't have a point. Just that I'm going to continue nursing. Em is one of those look longingly over the boob at each other kind of baby. Since she's the last - I'm going to hold on to that for a little while longer.

Ode to Miss Daisy

Miss Daisy you have served us well,
Oh the stories you could tell.

For 20 years in our family you stayed,
Ben drove you to teach the 2nd grade.
Grammy drove you in the snow,
Meemaw drove you, too, we know.

Then to the Dough fam you came,
and then you never looked the same.
For on your windows we added tint,
and made you look like a mac daddy pimp.

Then Dan, the driving he took over,
your yellow color he would not cover.

Now you're staying while we go -
and how well you served us you'll never know.

Goodbye Miss Daisy. Thank you for 91K wonderful miles.
(groan)

1/3 down...

I think as of tonight we will have the playroom, girls' rooms, the den and our bedroom almost completely packed up. This is 4 rooms and a garage behind our plan - but still doing better than we could be.

We have tomorrow afternoon and evening, Tuesday morning, Wednesday night and Thursday morning to finish packing and finish loading the air conditioned storage unit. Then we will be taking a load of furniture, bags of clothes, toys, appliances and misc crap to the donation site.

Thursday night we will finish all the packing of dishes and last minute items and store those in our den. Then move the rest of the furniture to the garage for storage.

Friday morning we have a cleaner coming to do the move out cleaning while we pack for the drive and meet a friend for lunch. Then the carpet guys are coming in the afternoon. I am taking the girls to go play with their friends - and then to dinner with them. Dan will stay behind and sleep. We'll come home and the girls will hide out in their room and go to bed - while I load up the car.

Early, early, early Saturday morning we will begin our 2800+ mile journey. I'm excited. The final countdown has begun. This time next week I'll be living in Maine.

I DID IT!

Yep - I was able to rid my home of 0-3 month clothes. I put 2 little cute outfits in Emma Leigh's box, but the rest of the 0-3 month clothes have found their way into our donation bag.

I also filled two more garbage bags full of kids clothes to donate. WHOO HOO!

Now - I'm not saying the things went into the bag without a couple of tears shed, but they are there and that's what counts.

I can still have another baby if I want (which I don't!!) but I would have to buy it new clothes - and that's ok with me. I think the 4th sister should be able to get new clothes anyway. But - let me make this clear - I don't want there to be a 4th girl. Dan doesn't want there to be a 4th girl... and really - not even if the 4th child has a penis. Which I realize would make it a boy - even though I don't know what a small child with a penis would like like. ;)
